Autumn walks for a first date in Cardiff

Golden leaves, fresh air and a coffee to finish. Autumn is a lovely time for a walk and a chat.

Autumn is my favourite time of year for a first date in Cardiff. The air is crisp, the parks turn gold and the crowds thin out. A walk takes the pressure off too: you're side by side, there's always something to look at, and it's easy to end after half an hour or stretch it into an afternoon if you're getting on well.

Why a walk works

Talking while you walk is easier than staring at each other across a table. If the conversation dries up for a moment, there's a view to comment on. If you'd like to wrap things up, you can head for the café or the bus stop. For many of us, that low key start is exactly what a first meeting needs.

Bute Park and the Taff Trail

Bute Park runs beside the River Taff next to Cardiff Castle, and in October the trees are lovely. The paths are wide and easy, there's a café, and the Taff Trail gives you the option of walking further if you want to. It's right in the city, so it's simple to get to by bus or train, and a good choice whatever your age or fitness.

Roath Park Lake

A lap of the lake is an easy, flat walk with plenty to see, from the gardens to the lighthouse tower in the water. It's a classic for a reason. Aim for a weekday or an earlier slot if you'd like it quieter, and check café opening times before you set off.

Cardiff Bay and the Barrage

The Bay is open and flat, with places to sit and watch the water. You can walk along the waterfront, or carry on across the Barrage towards Penarth. It can be breezy, so wrap up, and pick somewhere warm to finish.

Out along the coast

If you'd like a change of scene, the Wales Coast Path at Penarth and Barry gives you sea views and fresh air. Porthkerry Park near Barry has woodland paths and a pebble beach, and Cosmeston Lakes near Penarth is a gentle, quiet option. Go by public transport or drive to a busy car park, and make your own way there. It's worth knowing how you'll get home before the light fades.

Autumn tips for a walking date

  • Mind the light. The clocks go back at the end of October, so it gets dark early. Choose a morning or early afternoon.
  • Wear sensible shoes. Leaves can hide mud and wet patches, and nobody enjoys a slippery path.
  • Have a plan B. Know a nearby café or museum for when the rain arrives.
  • Keep it short. An hour is plenty for a first meeting. You can always walk further next time.
  • Stay safe. Stick to busy, well used paths, tell a friend where you're going and make your own way there. Our guide to dating safely has more.
