If you're dating again after a long relationship, a divorce or a bereavement, it can feel like the rules have changed. The good news is that you're in good company: plenty of people start again later in life, and about two in five Go Cardiff Dating members are 45 or over. Here's some friendly advice for getting started.
Be clear about what you want
A long-term partner, a companion for walks and Sunday lunches, someone to travel with, or just good conversation...all are perfectly good reasons to be here. When you sign up you can say what you're hoping for, and it helps the right people find you.
Photos: recent, clear and smiling
One clear, recent photo of your face does more than a dozen group shots. Add one or two of you doing something you enjoy...in the park, in the garden, with the dog. Skip the sunglasses, and resist the photo from fifteen years ago. People would rather meet the real you.
Write a profile that sounds like you
You don't need to sell yourself. A few honest lines about what fills your days and what you'd like to share with someone go a long way. Specific is better than general: "I walk the dog round Bute Park most mornings" says more than "I love the outdoors".
Sending the first message
Mention something from their profile, ask a question, and keep it short. "I see you like walking...have you done the climb up Garth Hill?" is far better than "Hi". And don't be discouraged by a slow reply: people have busy lives, and plenty of us only check messages after a long day.
Take it at your own pace
There's no rush. Chat for as long as you need to feel comfortable, have a phone or video call, then meet somewhere public for a coffee or a short walk. If it's been a while since your last first date, that's completely normal...the other person is probably just as nervous.
Stay safe
A few simple habits make meeting someone new much safer: keep chatting on the site to begin with, never send money to someone you haven't met, and tell a friend where you're going. Our guide to dating safely covers it all.
